Exercise to Lose Body Fat
I know I have made the mistake of spending hours at the gym, working so hard to lose weight only to be rewarded with over doing it and getting several injuries. Many people will be surprised that the best way to lose body fat does not require blood, sweat, and tears. What is the secret? Low Intensity Aerobic Exercise combined with weight lifting to build lean muscles.
Low Intensity Aerobic Exercise
Research supports the best way to lose body fat is to participate in a low intensity aerobic activity for 45 to 60 minutes, 5 to 6 times a week. By exercising at a low intensity for a long period of time, you burn fat instead of glycogen, which is carbohydrates stored in your muscles. I am a huge fan of low intensity aerobic exercise to lose body fat because everyone can do it, it has low impact on joints minimizing injuries, and it works!
What are different types of low intensity aerobic exercises?
• light jogging
Tip: Try walking during your lunch time or after dinner. Bring a co-worker or family member along to make it more fun and enjoyable!
Weight lifting to build lean muscle is an important part of losing body fat. By building muscle, you are increasing your metabolism. What exactly is metabolism? It is the amount of energy, calories, we burn a day. Muscle requires more energy to function, which means the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn. I recommend doing weight lifting 2 - 3 times a week.
Tip: Make sure to strengthen your whole body and not just a few muscles. Doing only push ups and biceps curls will not give you the best results.
Exercising to lose weight does not have to consist of endless hours on the treadmill. All it takes is a smart workout plan, consistency, and dedication. Go ahead and give it a try. Anyone can do it!
